St Kilda
-
Beachside cool
- Café culture.

St Kilda, Melbourne’s favourite playground, was once a seaside resort for genteel Melburnians to take the sea air. In the 1960s and 1970s it fell out of favour and took on a seedier edge, but today its racy atmosphere has largely been replaced by a race to the next alfresco table.
On weekends, Melburnians flock here to walk, cycle and skate along the palm-lined foreshore or to sit in an outdoor café with a coffee – or something a little stronger – and take in the panoramic views of Port Phillip Bay.
Away from the foreshore, you’ll find much of St Kilda’s activity concentrated in Fitzroy and Acland streets. Fitzroy Street is renowned for its cool cafes, restaurants and bars, with tables spilling onto the footpath, and is one of Melbourne’s most attractive eating and drinking streets. Nearby Acland Street is a bustling, vibrant street with an eclectic mix of restaurants, wine bars and continental cake shops. During the day the streets are lined with people drinking lattes; at night they’re buzzing with clubbers and night owls.
The second-hand stores in Acland Street are favourites for bric-a-brac shoppers and retro fashion dressers. Go treasure hunting for a stylish gift, and don’t miss the selection of independent music and book stores, as well as second-hand furniture.

Southbank
- Shopping
- Riverside dining
- Crown Entertainment Complex.

The Southbank promenade along the Yarra River is one of Melbourne’s most popular dining precincts, with its riverside setting and fantastic views of the city skyline. The promenade has a broad range of cafes and restaurants all the way from the Southgate complex to the Crown Casino – many with outdoor terraces and balconies where you can dine alfresco and watch street performers and passing pedestrians while taking in the stunning views of the cityscape as it lights up at night.

The Southgate complex and Crown Casino are also known for their eclectic and unique shops and galleries including luxury lingeries, perfume and fashion stores such as Versace, Gucci, Armani and Prada.

Up along St Kilda Road on the south bank of the Yarra River is the city’s arts precinct, incorporating the Australian Ballet, Melbourne Symphony, The National Gallery of Victoria (due to open in late 2003), the Victorian Arts Centre, Playbox Theatre and The Malthouse. And on Sundays, the arts centre market is held along the footways at the eastern end of the riverbank.

For a different perspective, jump onboard a scenic cruise, water taxi or gondola outside the Southgate complex for a cruise along the Yarra River.

NewQuay – Melbourne Docklands
- Fabulous food and wine
- Harbourside location
- City views
- Marina.

Opened in late 2002, NewQuay is Melbourne's newest dining precinct, offering a stunning waterfront location and a bustling harbourside eating, drinking and shopping experience.

The NewQuay bars and cafes cover a broad range of cuisines and are run by some of the biggest names in Melbourne hospitality, as well as sporting stars. Visit the modern Morrocan eating house Mecca Bah for delectable middle-eastern cuisine in their relaxed restaurant and bar, or sample fresh seafood at Livebait, a Mediterranean seafood brasserie with stunning 270 degree city and harbour views. Re-Juice is the perfect place for a healthy pick-me-up, with juices, smoothies, soups and wraps, or enjoy the smooth grooves and cocktails at trendy Cargo.

Visitors can enjoy the vibrant waterfront lifestyle with a range of activities. A focus on public art themes is evident in the precinct as well as water and recreational activities, including bike riding, history walks, cruises and fishing.

Situated opposite Telstra Dome on Victoria Harbour, NewQuay is just one kilometre from the CBD and boasts views back to the city, Victoria Harbour and the Bolte Bridge. The NewQuay Marina services private and public vessels, and when completed, will have 98 berths.
